Mayor Friday Ellis Declares Candidacy for Second Term, Unveils Vision for Monroe’s Future

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

**MONROE** — Today, Mayor Friday Ellis officially declares his candidacy for a second term, outlining an ambitious vision to build upon the substantial progress achieved during his initial tenure as Monroe’s mayor.

“In these pivotal times, our city requires steadfast leadership and a clear roadmap for advancing economic growth, fostering job opportunities, and ensuring public safety,” Mayor Ellis affirmed. “In just a few short years, we’ve overcome apathy and hopelessness, demonstrating the transformative power of a community rallying behind a shared vision, executing strategic plans, and delivering on promises. The City of Monroe is undergoing a revival and we have much more to anticipate.”

At 46 years old and registered as an Independent, Mayor Ellis assumed office in July 2020, securing resounding support from Monroe voters.

“I am proud to announce my candidacy for re-election, continuing the momentum we’ve collectively built. Our success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of over 1,100 city employees tirelessly serving our community every day,” Mayor Ellis expressed.

“When I took office in 2020 amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Monroe faced critical infrastructure, operational, and community issues. We’ve systematically addressed many of them and are on the verge of completing those that remain. I seek the support of Monroe voters who share my belief that our city is on the right track and must stay the course, implementing improvements benefiting all citizens,” Ellis added. “I am running for re-election to carry out our strategic vision, so our city does not regress. I am enthusiastic about the pending growth and initiatives already underway. I believe the majority of Monroe residents recognize and appreciate the improvements made and desire the continued revival of our great city.”

Mayor Ellis’ first term has been marked by notable achievements:

**Public Safety:**
Significant investments in public safety through pay increases for police and fire personnel, increased police presence citywide, graduation of over 50 new officers through the police training academy, sign-on bonuses for post-certified officers, and the implementation of state-of-the-art technology are helping reduce crime. Mayor Ellis has proactively fostered partnerships with regional, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, resulting in restored communication and trust.

**Economic Development:**
Leveraging his background as a former small business owner, Mayor Ellis has played a pivotal role in attracting new businesses, promoting industrial sites, supporting the expansion and retention of established businesses, and driving new job creation through frequent business and industry site visits to ensure their needs are met. His efforts have resulted in consistent year-over-year increases in sales tax revenue, instilling renewed optimism and confidence among existing and prospective business owners. Collaborations with regional mayors and legislators have secured critical funding to promote Passenger Rail Service. An aggressive broadband expansion and an open access connectivity initiative at recreation centers and parks is slated for implementation in 2024.

**Flood Mitigation and Weather Preparedness:**
Addressing decades of deferred maintenance, Mayor Ellis secured millions in state and federal funding for flood mitigation and major drainage projects, benefiting residents at risk. Initiatives include a city-wide $6 million subsurface drainage cleaning and repair program, pump and lift station repairs, and multiple Youngs Bayou capacity-building projects.

**Quality of Life Prioritization:**
Mayor Ellis has prioritized the city’s quality of life by implementing community-led strategic plans for parks and recreation. The Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan (www.oneroe.city) ensures accessibility for all residents through functional and aesthetic improvements to local recreation centers and parks. Recent projects include a multi-million-dollar expansion of the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, state-of-the-art tennis courts and clubhouse facilities, new inclusive playgrounds, and beautification upgrades at multiple recreation centers.
